FAQ’s answered by our team

I am new to figure skating and am not sure about what skate is best for me. How do you determine what model I need?- At Go Figure we have boots and blades for all levels of figure skating. We take into account what skills you want to achieve and are working on, how often you’re skating, along with your height and weight. All of these factors combined help us determine the support level you will need in a boot.

What are the price-points for figure skates?- Our figure skate for youth beginner level instruction starts around $90-$130. As you advance in skill level, the amount of support will need to increase therefore the price-point will also increase. For example, a figure skater who is working on single jumps including their axel jump would spend on average around $700 depending on their boot and blade preference. At Go Figure we strive to give you a great selection to choose from for your new skates and also carry consignment skates that have been gently worn as an option for you also.

How often should I get my skates sharpened?- We advise that you should have your skates sharpened every 40 hours on the ice. Some skaters prefer sooner.

I’ve seen that skates can be heat molded, is this something you do in store?- We absolutely offer this service in store. Some boots do have the ability to be heat molded to increase comfort for the skater and help with the break in period. Some boots are not able to be heat molded based on the materials that are within the boot but still have other features to help you successfully break in your new boots.

My skater is still growing and I want to make sure that they have enough growing room. Should we go a half size-full size up from what they are measuring?- Unlike street shoes, it is very important for skates to be as fitted as possible. For our younger skaters we do our best to give them as much room as we see fit however, “going up a size” is definitely something that we do not recommend. A skate that is too large can lead to potential injury, lack of control, and other foot problems down the line.

I’m having pain on the sides of my feet (width). Is there anything that I can do to fix that?- Absolutely! We have the ability to spot stretch boots to make a small pocket along the sides for where your toes are bothering you. When you come in for a skate “punch” we charge $10 but will allow you to bring back your boot as many times within a two week period to have them adjusted in any way.

How should I protect my skates from water damage?- Many boots are pre-treated but we do have different methods to waterproof boots that do not have that feature. When you purchase boots from us, any waterproofing will be done free of charge before you leave with your new skates. If down the line you would need a “touch up,” bring your skates back to us and for a small fee we can reapply waterproofing.

What are some maintenance habits that I need to have to take care of my boots and blades?- Below are some key points we advise when maintaining your boots and blades:

-When getting off the ice, ensure that you have wiped off your blade well and put on your “soakers” to soak up any additional moisture that would come from your blades as they adjust to the air off the ice. This reduces rusting and water damage.

-NEVER leave your skates in the car when it’s hot outside. Not only does this affect the heat molding of your boot, but it does not allow for your skate to air out fully causing odor and molding.

-We advise wearing hard guards while walking around the rink. Though your blades are strong, so much as a small rock can put a small divot in the edges. We want your blades to last you as long as possible.

-Air your skates out after you skate. This allows for your boots to fully dry and prevent molding and odor. When doing this take the insole of your boot out also to allow the sole to dry fully.
